The Queen’s Jubilee Celebration Comes to Salisbury

The saga of Val and the Queen’s patch!

Lesley arranged for our logo to be printed and embroidered on to the patch we had been provided.  Val then tried to take it to the queen, here’s how she got on!

A wet Val tried to get into the cathedral close via the high street gate, there was a large crowd and barriors along the high street with police and in some cases with their sniffer dogs patroling the area. The gate was in “lock down”,  so I had to go through the rain around to St. Anns Gate in Exeter street.  Lots of people where already there incuding large parties of flag waving children. The area near the green attendant hut was cordened off and again “locked down”. So I had to wait for over an hour as the Queen was due.  Asking several policemen and marshal if I could pass and if they knew where the Giant Queen was, no joy! Eventually everyone started to cheer the sun shone and a convoy of cars came into the close through the high street gate I did just get a glimpse of the Queen as she passed to go to lunch, somewhere over the museum side of the close.

We were then allowed to move onto the lawns in front of the cathedral, the paths were cordened off ready for the Queens walk about and cathedral visit, after she had eaten! Still no one seemed to know aout our Queen but at least it had stopped raining.

There were several tents for different councils, jousting, RSPCA, Bustard conservation, history players and so on.

Eventually I found the salisbury council tent at the far end off the very soggy lawns. There she was over ten feet tall .She had one of her corgis with her, he was very friendly. I presented our patch, although her majesty said nothing, her dressmakers were impressed by the patch and thanked us for it.

I then left pushing through the large crowds still coming into the close wanting to see the other Queen!

After all the excitement it was definitely time I had a cuppa.

Queen’s Jubilee Celebrations

Salisbury Bonsai Society will be attending the Queen’s Jubilee celebrations in Laverstock at the Sports and Social Club’s sports field on Sunday 3rd June, 10 am – 5 pm. There will be loads to do including a bouncy castle, raffle, displays, outside bar, bbq, craft tent and much more! We will be doing demonstrations and selling stock from the club shop. We need volunteers to help out and man the stand, so if you are free please do come along and join in the fun!

Swindon Show and Welsh Seminar

Swindon Winter Image Show

Back in February we attended the Swindon Winter Image show.  I always think this is the start of the bonsai year.  We have been going to this show for over 10 years now & every year it has been getting better & bigger especially as they have moved to a bigger venue.  There was a selection of clubs from all over the country.  So we saw some of the best trees on display.  There were 2 rooms with traders busy selling their merchandise, the main display hall and another room for demonstrations.  This year they had a reporter/photographer from The Independent newspaper who photographed lots of people with their trees.  Sally May from the Swindon club was featured in the paper with a write up about the hobby!  It was a very good day & good to catch up with friends.

Dragon/Celtic Knot Seminar Weekend

Then in March Clive & I were invited to the Dragon/Celtic Knot clubs for a weekend seminar in Wales.  It was the 1st time the club had tried anything like this.

We are lucky as we have friends not too far from the club, so we could go for the whole weekend.  We found it very interesting.  They had trees on display & also had a competition for best Yamadori (tree from wild), best tree styled from Garden centre, & best tree grown from seed.  Over the 2 days there were a lot of demos & discussions, & each day finished off with a question & answer session.  What I did find interesting was on the Sunday they had 5 men all saying how they would style the same tree & all the styles worked!

With Salisbury’s 25th Anniversary Show coming up I hope you will come along on August 5th 2012. We are having some really good clubs displaying & also a chance to see the demos & buy some trees & you don’t have far to travel to see them!!

Next Meeting is Cancelled

Unfortunately, we have had to cancel our next meeting. We usually hold a BBQ for our May meeting because it falls on the bank holiday, but this year we have been unable to secure a suitable venue.

However, we will be attending the Wessex Bonsai Society’s 2012 Bonsai Exhibition which will be held at the Kinson Community Centre, for further details on the show can be found here.

Hope to see you all there!

April’s Meeting

At last night’s exciting workshop meeting, which we choose some of our trees’s for our display at the Wessex show. We had fun working out the best possible arrangement for our tree’s.  Hopes are high for an award or two! Certainly some good looking tree’s in our selection.

The workshop was, as ever, was very useful and our bonsai experts where on hand to share their vast knowledge and help sculpt our members tree’s.

I spent most of my time choosing a tree and some pots from a selection Ken had brought. So many trees, so difficult to choose!

Next Meeting

Don’t forget it’s our monthly meeting tomorrow.  This months meeting is a general workshop so bring along your trees and get ready to have some fun.

We will also be selecting trees for our display at Wessex Bonsai Society’s annual show, so bring along your best trees for consideration.  The show is on the 6th May so there’s not much time left to get your trees in tip top shape, more details of the show can be found here.

We will also have tea and refresment’s available, plus the usual society shop should you need to top up on any bonsai paraphernalia.

See you on Monday
