Last Meeting (March 2012)

In our last meeting we held a general workshop.  Many trees were re-potted and some were trimmed into shape! I spent most of my time looking for a new pot only to put my Hornbeam into the pot I had brought for it!

The winners of the tree of the month competition were Tony in first place, Trevor and Wilf in second place and, Cheryl, Val and Stuart in third.  An archive of previous winners is available here.

Club Trip to Lodders Bonsai, Holland by Sandra

Last month 8 members went to Holland again-going over on the night ferry.lots of trees!

We got to Lodders late morning & all split up & went in different directions. Within minutes I had already chosen a tree-a Kiyohmi Acer which I want to style in a oval shape, like one on show at the Swindon show last month, so I was pleased at that.

The choice once again was confusing as there is so much there, both indoor & outdoor, although the 2 Clive’s couldn’t find any thing by the time we left that day.

Next morning we went to another dealer we had found by accident last year! His trees are not as show quality as the ones at Lodders but his prices are very reasonably priced. So quite a few trees were bought from him. Graham (the owner) was so pleased with what we had purchased that he took us back to his house for coffee & biscuits!

Both evenings we went to the local Chinese which is close to the hotel & as its our 3rd time at least there the waitress remembered us!.& for some of us it was back to the bar.

The last morning we went back to Lodders to pay & load up the coach as we managed to bring it all back with us. Grahame told them about the 25th anniversary & Lodders have kindly donated a Acer.

Then on our way back to the ferry we called into Japanese bonsai centre in Belgium that had been recommended to us. The Clive’s went mad-this dealer had lots of pines & junipers. It has a lot of koi ponds which are closed at this time of the year. They had a good range of trees at all prices. They have a restaurant which is only open weekends in the winter but they have lots of bonsai around the tables & another unit which is a café/bar & soft play area which we were invited into for free coffee & pancakes.

Then it was onto the ferry home-which was a brand new one.

It was a very enjoyable time especially for those of us who are bonsai enthusiasts

A huge thanks to Grahame, Lesley & Paul for the trip
